Mar de la Selva (1963) was born in the Surinamese capital Paramaribo. Her artistic expression in ceramics and designs of wallpaper, fabrics and clothing are a reflection of the different cultures in which she grew up. Being the daughter of a diplomat, from the age of 12 Mar de la Selva lived successively in Venezuela, Mexico and Spain.
The greatest source of inspiration for Mar de la Selva is nature. “Nature is the genuine sculptor” is her motto. Her artworks are therefore a subtle symbiosis of organic and exotic forms, often with erotic accents.
Mar de la Selva’s recent kimono line carries designs without borders, reflecting the infinity of nature. The prints of the silk and cotton robes are based on digitally processed photographs of various dried tree leaves from the tropical rainforest of her native country, seamlessly covering the shapes of the feminine body.
Mar de la Selva works and lives in Paramaribo and Madrid.
